Online, email, and web-based interventions for cessation support in the US

Attempts to approximate the support delivered by counselors have included the use of static cessation websites, computer programs, online chats with a live or automated cessation counselor, and email.

For example, the American Cancer Society developed the free Empowered to Quit program which delivers informational and social support to enrollees by email prior to and after their chosen quit date. The program was implemented after research demonstrated that it increased quit rates compared to a control group. The program is now available on cancer.org (https://www.cancer.org/cancer/risk-prevention/tobacco/empowered-to-quit.html). As of June 2024, 73% of all enrollees who completed a user experience survey 30 days after enrolling reported not having smoked cigarettes in the last 7 days.
