The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), 2010

In 2010, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) included important provisions to increase the number of people with health insurance and expand tobacco cessation benefits. The number of people who are uninsured has dropped from 45.2 million in 2013 to 26.4 million in 2022.1 The law requires all ACA-compliant health plans, including for the Medicaid expansion population, to cover tobacco cessation services at no cost to the individual. Unfortunately, this provision is currently being challenged in the court system.
