Tips From Former Smokers® (Tips®)

An example of a successful mass media campaign is Tips From Former Smokers® (Tips®) launched in 2012 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The campaign (which airs yearly) features individuals who formerly smoked and live with a severe illness caused by smoking. Their goal is to educate and warn viewers about the health risks of smoking. Exposure to the Tips campaign between 2012 and 2023 was estimated to generate an additional 2.1 million calls to the national 1-800-QUIT-NOW telephone counseling quitline.1 An evaluation of Tips for the period 2012-2018 also found that in addition to increasing the number of quit attempts by exposed individuals, over one million sustained quits (of 6 months or longer) could be attributed to Tips.2
