Trends in cigarette consumption and lung cancer mortality rates by sex in the US, 1900-2020

The trend in cigarette consumption over time is mirrored by the delayed male lung cancer mortality, and to a lesser degree, female lung cancer mortality as the progression of lung cancer occurs with a time lag from exposure to smoking.

Some factors related to tobacco use including the 1964 Surgeon General’s Report and the passing of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act are listed here to show large moments that have shaped tobacco control; however, many local level policies and interventions are not accounted for. In addition, tobacco industry influence, though consistently present over the years, is not accounted for in the highlighted events.
