High-Tobacco-Burden States in the US and Neighboring and Comparison Low-Tobacco-Burden States
In the 13 high-tobacco-burden states, current tobacco use among adults reached 35.3%, compared to 28.3% in low-tobacco-burden states. Cigarette smoking alone was 19.3% in high-tobacco-burden states, with West Virginia peaking at 25.8%, far above the Healthy People 2030 goal of 5%. E-cigarette use was also elevated, with Arkansas reporting 21.8% usage, compared to 10.9% in California.
