Smokeless Tobacco Products Use

Prevalence of smokeless tobacco products (e.g., chewing tobacco, oral moist snuff, dip, snus, dissolvable tobacco) use among US adults in 2024 was 4% among men and <1% among women. Aside from differences in smokeless tobacco use by gender, prevalence remains more heavily concentrated among segments of the population based on state of residence, with the highest percentage of US adults who reported current smokeless tobacco use in 2024 being those individuals living in Wyoming (8.2%), West Virginia (7.6%), Alabama (6.5%), and Mississippi (6.4%), and lowest in Puerto Rico (0.7%) and Connecticut (1.4%), Massachusetts (1.4%), and Rhode Island (1.5%) (Map 1.2.1).

Among US youth, 1.5% overall high-school students, 2.3% of high-school boys and 0.6% of high-school girls currently used smokeless tobacco in 2024.1 Majority of high-school students (84.0%) currently using smokeless tobacco products in 2023 used flavored products.1 Additionally, significant state-level variation was also observed in the prevalence of smokeless tobacco use among US youth (Map 1.2.2).
